How to check whether a fashion sale price is real

A sale sticker does not tell you whether you are getting a good price. Use these checks before buying clothing or footwear.

1. Look at the "was" price

A "was" price should reflect a genuine previous price for the item. If the same item is listed at a similar price elsewhere, or the "was" price seems unusually high, treat the claimed saving with caution.

2. Compare the final price

Add delivery charges, and check whether there is a minimum spend for free delivery. A lower item price can be cancelled out by extra costs.

3. Check the returns policy before you buy

For most online purchases, you generally have the right to cancel within 14 days of receiving the goods, and then return them. Many retailers give longer, and some make you pay return postage. Check who pays, how long you have and whether sale items are included.

4. Read the size and fit information

Check size guides, measurements and reviews for fit. Sizes vary between brands, and a wrong size costs time and possibly return postage.

5. Check the offer code rules

Codes may exclude sale items, certain brands or orders under a minimum spend, and may not combine with other offers.

6. Know your rights on faulty items

Sale goods must still be of satisfactory quality and as described. If something is faulty, contact the retailer promptly.

7. Take care with unfamiliar sellers

Check that the seller is who they say they are, with clear contact details, returns terms and secure payment. Be cautious of prices that look far too good to be true.
