How to spot a genuine restaurant discount

A restaurant offer can be a good way to try somewhere new or save on a meal you were already planning, but not every deal saves what it appears to — use this checklist before you book or turn up.

1. Read the conditions first

  • Valid dates, days and times.
  • Dine-in or takeaway.
  • Minimum spend or group size.
  • Whole menu or selected items and set menus.
  • Whether drinks, sides or service charge are excluded.

2. Work out the real saving

A “50% off” deal may apply to one dish only or the cheapest item. Compare the total with the offer against the normal menu price.

A set menu costing more than ordering what you would actually eat is not a saving.

3. Check the menu price on the restaurant’s own website

Prices vary between branches and change over time. If the offer’s “usual price” is higher than the current menu price, treat the claimed saving with caution.

4. See how you claim it

The offer may need a code, app, printed voucher or advance booking. Find out before you arrive so you are not told at the till that it cannot be applied.

5. Check expiry and use limits

Check whether the offer is single-use, limited to one per table or per person, and when it expires.

6. Confirm with the restaurant if in doubt

Offers can end early or differ between branches, so confirm the details with the restaurant if anything is unclear.

7. Tell staff about allergies

Tell the restaurant about allergies when you book and when you order.
