QR codes make it quick to open an offer, but a code can send you to any web address. Take a few seconds to check before you follow one.

1. Look at the link before you open it
Most phone cameras show the web address after scanning. Check that it matches the brand or venue you expect. Be wary of shortened links, misspelled names or unfamiliar domains.
2. Be careful with codes in public places
Someone can stick a fake QR code over a genuine one, for example on a poster, table or parking sign. If a sticker looks added on, or the code is on a loose or peeling label, do not scan it.
3. Do not enter sensitive details unexpectedly
Be cautious if a scanned page asks for your card number, bank login, password or a one-time code you were not expecting. If in doubt, close it and go to the brand's official website or app yourself.
4. Check the offer terms
Look for the expiry date, whether it is single-use, and whether it works in-store, online or both. Some codes only work at certain branches or need to be shown at the till.
5. Keep your screen ready
For in-store QR offers, make sure your screen brightness is up and the offer loads without needing to sign in at the counter.
6. Use official apps for payments
Do not pay through a page you arrived at from an unfamiliar QR code. Use the venue's official app or a payment method you already trust.
7. If something feels wrong
Stop, close the page and tell the venue. If you entered card details, contact your bank promptly.
